News: Huge meat recall prods further reforms

This week's recall of 143 million pounds of beef represents the confluence of two important trends in US agriculture: the push for more humane treatment of farm animals, and efforts to prevent the spread of disease.

Under pressure from consumers and animal rights groups, major restaurant and grocery chains from Burger King to Wolfgang Puck to Safeway are requiring that eggs and meat come from producers that reduce animal suffering.

News: STAR fights for ethical eggs on campus

Campus dining services have made adjustments in the past to accommodate the demands of students and staff by stocking shelves with fair trade products and incorporating locally-grown produce and dairy in their prepared meals.

But what about eggs?

Students for True Animal Rights (STAR), a club on campus whose mission is to "educate people about the rights of other animals," according to their web site, has been pushing for a change in the ingredients used by campus cafeterias.

News: Cat, Kittens Found Alive in WTC Rubble

While the chance of finding any survivors in the World Trade Center rubble vanished long ago, there is a survivor story. A cat apparently trapped under the debris has been found alive, with a new litter of three kittens. Rescuers found the cats curled up in a carton of napkins. They were in the basement of what used to be a restaurant at the World Trade Center.

News: Tracing an animal-rights philosophy

Tom Regan didn't start out worrying about the rights of the furry and finned to live a full and happy life. As a young man growing up in gritty Pittsburgh, he earned his cash from butchering meat in a store. Today, some 40 years later, Mr. Regan is firmly on the other side of the farmyard fence. His day job is as a professor at North Carolina State University, but he's also a devoted vegan, philosopher, filmmaker, and author. And he's become known as an intellectual firebrand for the animal-rights movement - a once-esoteric subject that is now common in philosophy departments from Harvard to Stanford.

News: Food and medicine included in air strikes don't contain animal products

Food and medicine included in air strikes Meals don't contain animal products out of respect for Islam WASHINGTON - The U.S. military strikes Sunday in Afghanistan included airdrops of food, medicine and other humanitarian supplies. The food, wrapped so that one packet has enough for one person for one day, does not contain any animal products so as not to violate any religious or cultural practices. Muslims, for example, do not eat pork.

News: Grace Slick rocks the world of meat

Very interesting pro vegan article on usatuday.com here are few fragments: As lead singer for Jefferson Starship, Grace Slick survived on a diet of rock and roll excess. But these days she's down-to-earth, food-wise: She's a vegan. "I'm in good health and people want to know what I do to be this way. Vegetarian is a slippery word," says Slick, who also sang for Starship's earlier incarnation, Jefferson Airplane. "I don't eat cheese, I don't eat duck — the point is I'm vegan."

News: Korea bans livestock, meat from Japan, ministry says

Korea banned all imports of livestock and meat products from Japan following the confirmation of an outbreak of mad cow disease in the country, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said yesterday. The measures mean that all imports of Japanese cows, sheep, goats and deer, as well as meat from these animals will be halted outright, ministry officials explained. In addition, Japanese drugs and cosmetics that contain animal compounds must provide an official certificate that clears the product of being contaminated by bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease, before being allowed into the country, they noted.

BACK TO SCHOOL: Schools serving more vegetarian kids, but veggie advocates say schools not getting the job done

WASHINGTON (AP) What does a kid have to do to get a decent veggie burger?

Lots, if it's lunch time at school.

Whether they've been touched by Babe the talking pig or grossed out by mad cow disease, a growing number of children are rejecting meat, school food service providers say. That's challenging schools to deliver more vegetarian fare along with sloppy joes, hot dogs and chicken fingers.
