Does saying no to meat mean you have to fall asleep in class? Anne Schuster, the special coordinator of the community health department at Wardenburg says she thinks that it is possible for vegetarians to eat healthy."You just need to be watchful with the amount of protein and vitamins you get. Vitamins like B12 and B6 are more difficult (to get) but not by any means impossible," Schuster said. The American Dietetic Association says that vegetarian diets offer many nutritional benefits

According to the American Obesity Association, approximately 30 percent of children ages 6 to 19 are overweight and 15 percent are obese. Rates of obesity-related diseases—such as type-2 diabetes, asthma and hypertension—are rapidly rising in young people. This is why the school cafeteria should be part of the remedy rather than contributing to the problem. Unlike meat, eggs and dairy products, plant-based foods contain no cholesterol and have been shown to reverse heart disease. Researchers have found that a vegetarian diet rich in soy and soluble fiber can reduce cholesterol levels by as much as one-third. David Jenkins, professor of nutrition and metabolism at the University of Toronto, has reported that “the evidence is pretty strong that vegans, who eat no animal products, have the best cardiovascular health profile and the lowest cholesterol levels.”

A trans-Atlantic collaboration is on the cards to analyse the impact of a vegan diet on diabetes in India. Neal Barnard, a US-based clinical researcher, plans to study if the results of his American experiment with the low-fat vegan diet will be similar in India as well. Dr. Barnard, who has been studying the effects of the vegan diet, a vegetarian diet that keeps out milk and milk products as well, has found that it controls blood sugar three times more effectively than a conventional diabetes diet did. His most recent study, involving 99 people with Type 2 Diabetes (more common in India) in the US, proved that the effect was stronger than using medication.

Vegetarianism is an increasingly popular lifestyle, practiced by many, especially young women. This document considers some of the important health considerations involved in choosing a vegetarian diet. Vegetarian styles of eating exclude animal products to varying degrees. However, more is involved than simply eliminating a piece of meat from one’s plate. It means substituting other foods to replace the nutrients found in animal products. A vegetarian diet consists mostly of fruits, vegetables, cereals, grains, nuts, seeds and pulses. There are several types of vegetarian diets. Vegans exclude all animal products. Lacto-vegetarians include dairy products. Ovo-vegetarians include eggs. Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat both eggs and dairy products. Some people who call themselves vegetarian will occasionally eat poultry or fish, or make exceptions for certain events. WHY CHOOSE A VEGETARIAN DIET?There are many reasons people choose to avoid animal products. These include health, environmental, ethical/moral, religious or economic concerns. This fact sheet will consider only the nutritional issues.

Maximizing Vegetarian Nutrition
by Michael Greger, M.D.
www.veganMD.org
August of this year, the BBC reported that the British
Advertising Standards Authority attacked a vegetarian organization
for making "alarmist" and "unsubstantiated" claims about the risks of
eating meat. Headlines like "Vegetarian group slammed over
advertising" splashed across the evening news. What "exaggerated"
claims were targeted by the Agency? The vegetarian group claimed that
meat-eaters were at increased risk of dying from heart disease and
stroke, and that vegetarians lived longer than meateaters. How could
the agency possibly find fault with such incontrovertible facts?
Because, simply put, our "facts" aren't true.

"The federal government and the American Dietetic Association have reported that vegetarian diets are nutritionally sound," says Neal Barnard, president of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a non-profit organization that focuses on preventive medicine.
Studies have found that vegetarians actually get far better nutrition than non-vegetarians, Barnard says. And vegetarians get larger amounts of fiber, iron, many vitamins and other cancer-fighting compounds than meat eaters.
"Almost all of our essential nutrients come from plants," says John McDougall, a physician and founder of the McDougall Plan for Healthy Living. "Plants make 11 of 13 known vitamins. B-12 made by bacteria is the only vitamin inadequately supplied by a plant-based diet."
