IN THIS time of crisis, the notion of comfort food has a special poignance for vegetarians.
For one thing, sticking to our "diet" - seen by many as frivolous to begin with - in the face of such calamity might seem out of scale. After all, if we might be nuked at any instant, why persist with something whose long-term health and social benefits will be obliterated by the tidal wave of life during wartime?
Another view, though, is that it makes even more sense to be vegetarian now: The message of connectedness and nonviolence is even more relevant, and eating lower on the food chain is generally a safer proposition.
When I asked veggie friends about favorite comfort foods, though, it became clear that since almost all of us were meat-eaters in childhood, what we associate with the warm glow of the hearth is often food we no longer eat.
