National Public Radio does shameful interview with Ritz Furs

Contributed by Anonymous

Did you catch the piece Linda Wertheimer did on National Public Radio at 5:30 p.m. Thursday? She interviewed a fur salesman at the Ritz fur shop in N.Y.C. They jokingly discussed how well the furs are selling in August, what kind of furs they sell (mink, muskrat, lamb, rabbit, fox, beaver, fisher), how the store is kept chilly so people will want to try on coats, ad nauseum. It was like free advertising. No mention of how inhumanely these animals are treated, the controversy, etc. Please ask all concerned to call/write/email N.P.R. immediately and complain. They do read letters on the air. Supporting the fur trade is not what public radio should be doing! www.npr.org email for All Things Considered is atc@npr.org

Too bad for NPR. I only listen to public radio during my work commute. I was thinking is was nearly time to contribute to them, but I will not now for sure. I'll try to write something but I'm afraid I will come off as too "radical". Most people think I'm crazy because I like Macintosh computers *and* I'm Vegan. Can you say extreme minority? I thought you could.

Wow, this made me angry. I wrote the following email to All Things Considered.

Subject: 9 Aug 01 piece on fur in New York

Dear Sir or Madam:

Growing up in Boston, I have listened to NPR and particularly All Things
Considered all my life on local member station WGBH 89.7. Although I now
live in Paris, I still tune in periodically via Internet to catch up on
the latest in responsible reporting. I listened with disappointment to
Linda's Wertheimer's piece last Thursday, the interview with Keith Tauber,
store manager for Ritz Furs in New York City.

The piece serves essentially as an advertisement for a cruel, unethical
and wasteful industry: before its fur becomes a coat, the fur animal lives
its life in a cage scarcely two feet square. Naturally active in the wild,
the animal has no room to move around, and will pace rapidly within its
small cage, as its feet become raw and swollen from the wire mesh. When
the animal is large enough to provide a profitable pelt, it must be
slaughtered in such a way as to preserve its valuable fur. Generally its
anus is lubricated with conductive jelly, and, as it bites a metal rod,
the animal is anally electrocuted from the inside. Alternatively, the
animal is placed in a box which is then filled with poisonous gas. The
latter method is less effective because the animal often survives the
initial gassing, requiring multiple subsequent gassings. This may sound
like sensationlist rhetoric, but it is the facts. Who can condone such
treatment of animals for frivolous luxury coats?

While Ms. Wertheimer seems to draw humor from the irony of fur coats
selling in the hot weather, the most striking irony is the fact that given
the state of our national power resources, Mr. Trauber cools his store to
55 degrees. I had always known how wasteful the pr
