Science: Add a Decade to Your Life

Contributed by Sergio

It's tried-and-true advice -- eat better, get some exercise, quit smoking, and you'll live longer. But how much longer? A new study shows you might just add a full decade -- 10 years of good-quality living.
"Even making modest changes [in lifestyle] looks like it adds many years to your life," says Gary Fraser, MBChB, PhD, professor of medicine and epidemiology at Loma Linda (Calif.) University. His study appears in the July 9 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

For the study -- which he began in 1976 -- Fraser sent questionnaires to more than 34,000 men and women, all members of the California Seventh-Day Adventist Church and all over age 30. Each was asked numerous, detailed questions regarding medical history, weight and height, diet, level of physical activity, and smoking habits.

The only thing I don't like about these and similar articles is
the suggestion that eating a vegan diet will "only" add a couple
years to your life. Smoking and exercise accounts for the majority
of life extension. So in the minds of meat eaters out there who may
be reading those articles, they're thinking, "Why go vegan if it's
only going to add at most one or two years to my life? I'd rather
be *happy* eating meat and die one year earlier than be *miserable*
eating a vegan diet all my life and living an extra year." If it's
10 years longer that vegans live, then maybe some would start
to listen. Trouble is, a lot of meat-eaters don't read the fine
print in those reports, either. Most research done on vegetarians
shows that vegetarians (especially vegans) have a higher quality of
living in the late years of their lives. So while meat eaters are
stuck in bed, popping pills down their throats to control blood
pressure and cholesterol, vegans are up and running around just
fine. I think this should be emphasized more in such reports.
