News: Senator Takes a Stand for Animals

Contributed by Sergio

On Monday, July 9, 2001, one United States Senator took an exceptional stand against animal cruelty.

Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) spoke out on behalf of the food animals that routinely suffer institutionalized abuse and unspeakable cruelty.

Senator Byrd had this to say:

Our inhumane treatment of livestock is becoming widespread and more and more barbaric. Six-hundred-pound hogs--they were pigs at one time--raised in 2-foot-wide metal cages called gestation crates, in which the poor beasts are unable to turn around or lie down in natural positions, and this way they live for months at a time. But he is even not a vegetarian.

"Additionally, those who perpetuate such barbaric practices will be put on notice that they are being watched."

Well, I bet they're quaking in their boots.

Sounds like the usual political posturing, i.e. utterly sans testicles.

Senator Byrd Should Be Applauded (Score: 1)

Everyone should give Senator Byrd a break. He is a senator and not a policeman. He can only craft the laws but has no power to enforce them. He did his part which is to raise awareness of the problem and tell the people responsible for enforcing the laws in question (US Dep. of Agriculture) to do a better job. This is not political posturing because there are vastly more cattle farmers in WV than animal rights activists. He's pissing off many people by saying this at all. Most people just want their dead animal burgers and don't care how they are made. So I say bravo to Senator Byrd for doing the right thing!
