Science: Scientist feels lab animals' pain

Mistreat a pet mouse, bird or rat and you could face criminal charges in all 50 states. But if a scientist does the same thing in a laboratory setting, there's no penalty.


Scientist John McArdle, who has spent 20 years working on animal rights issues, thought he had changed that last year when the Department of Agriculture settled his lawsuit by agreeing to set standards.
