Veggie burgers 'just as salty' as meat ones
Contributed by VeggieGirl
Vegetarian burgers and sausages may seem healthy but many are just as
salty as meat varieties, a study has revealed.
One make of veggie burger contained more salt than three packets of
crisps, while one vegetarian sausage was saltier than five packets of
crisps.
Fry's Vegetarian Traditional Sausage contained 2.8g of salt per
sausage – the highest in the study – and nearly half the maximum
recommended daily limit of 6g.
In contrast, one pork sausage from Sainsbury's contained 0.7g of salt
– a quarter that of the vegetarian option.
Fry's vegetarian burgers had 1.8g of salt, making them six times
saltier than an Asda meat burger.

The big issue is that the traditional advice is for people on a SAD diet (Standard American Diet).
That is to say, a diet rich in sodium from animal products.
The same rules do not apply to a vegan or vegetarian diet which is potassium rich and low in sodium. We need our sodium to keep a balance.
Mostly, vegans and vegetarians can ignore all this stuff. You could have to be really, really stupid ... and determined ... to overdose on salt. |
