Vegetarians are people, too, dang it
Contributed by VeggieGirl
To anyone who is wondering, vegetarians do not live on tofu alone. We
don't (necessarily) forage for twigs and berries in the woods. And we
don't hate you because you are eating a hamburger topped with bacon
and ham slices (Hey, it's your angioplasty, not mine.)
As a longtime vegetarian, I found myself nodding emphatically to parts
of Taylor Clark's recent column "Meatless Like Me" on slate.com. Not
so much his declaration that vegetarians "know" that meat tastes
"good" -- "We're not insane. We know meat tastes good; it's why
there's a freezer case at your supermarket full of woefully inadequate
meat substitutes" -- but, rather, his overall attempt to dispel some
common myths.
Honestly, I don't care what you -- and by you, I mean meat-eaters --
consume. My family eats meat, I was raised in a hunting family. My
boyfriend eats meat. Many of my friends eat meat. Heck, I wanted to
throw a "Dress As Your Favorite Food" party simply to see my
pork-loving friend dressed as a ham garnished with pineapple slices.
Stop accusing us of judging you. We're not. Well, not all of us.
Yes, in my fantasy world, there would be no steaks, fillets or
sausages. But my fantasy world also consists of talking otters and
kittens riding unicorns around on rainbows, so it isn't all about me
(or us), is it? To each his/her own, is what I'm trying to say.
