Vegan cakes

I've always toyed with the vegetarian concept. When I moved to Dothan,
I didn't eat meat, but it's hard to stay meat-free when every other
restaurant is a barbecue joint.
My best friend, Ali, is a vegan, but she lives in South Florida, where
she has access to lovely things I can only dream of, like Whole Foods,
Publix and organic stores.
As I was pondering a recipe to try out for the paper, I thought I
would try some animal-friendly cooking on the meat-loving newsroom.
I found some chocolate cake recipes that were free of animal products.
One used vegan products, the other used applesauce. The user reviews
proclaimed "I fooled everyone with this cake!" and "No one knew the
difference! This cake tastes just like the real thing."
I wondered, "Could I fool the newsroom with a great cake heist?"
So I set off to make my cakes.
