Vegetarians not hurting beef demand

A cattle industry spokesperson says seven million vegetarians don't
have much of an affect on the amount of beef moving in the U.S. A
study done for the magazine Vegetarian Times indicates a little over
three percent of U.S. adults avoid meat. The effects, however, are not
evident, says Mary Young, vice-president of nutrition for the National
Cattlemen's Beef Association.
"Demand for beef is very high," Young said, reacting to the results of
the survey. "The American population has a love affair with beef and
actually there's an increased interest in consuming more high quality
protein foods among the public, including lean beef."

The Vegetarian Times survey of 5,050 people, was done by Harris
Interactive Service Bureau and commissioned by the magazine. The
survey says most vegetarians, 59 percent, are women and 57 percent
have been vegetarians a decade or more.
More than 80 percent of vegetarians are between 18-54 years old. Among
the total number of vegetarians, about a million are vegan and consume
no animal products at all. An additional 22.8 million people follow
what is referred to a vegetarian-inclined diet. And among the reasons
cited for being vegetarian are health, animal welfare and
environmental concerns.
