UK vegan cheese mini-roundup. =) by Anonymous Vegan on August 02,2001 | 04:12:36
The closest to 'good' that I've found in the UK in
terms of vegan solid cheeses is Redwood's 'Cheezly'. It's available as plain cheddar
style, or also with garlic or fake 'bacon bits'.
It's fine sliced in a sandwich with pickle etc.,
and also quite adequate nuked on tortilla chips.
Off the top of my head I've also tried Scheeze and
veganrella solid cheeses and the galaxy slices,
and while each one is different and has its own
pros and cons I find them to be overall bordering
on mildly unpleasant. This is from the UK buyers'
perspective.
There is also no ubiquitous vegan 'pizza cheese'.
I believe this is universal. I'm in two minds
about whether I want someone to hurry up and
invent synthetic casein. On the one hand I'd
have, well, stretchy phlegmy plast-o-cheese
for pizza. On the other hand I'd get fat
and unhealthy (again).
